Matthew Weeks was sentenced to death for the murder of Charlotte Dymond in 1844. Charlotte was a young servant girl, and Matthew, a farm labourer, was said to be obsessed with her. The narrative suggests he killed her in a fit of rage after she ended their relationship.

Ever since, his spirit is said to have been trapped there. A significant aspect of his haunting is the belief, held by many then and now, that he was innocent of the crime for which he paid the ultimate price. His ghost is described as a tortured soul, endlessly walking the corridors of the jail, perhaps still seeking the justice he was denied in life.

Eyewitnesses over the years have reported seeing his ghostly figure roaming the corridors, sometimes appearing in cells or peering out from the jail's windows. His story is a haunting reminder of Bodmin Moor's dark history and the finality of capital punishment.
