The Story

Matthew Weeks was sentenced to death for the murder of Charlotte Dymond in 1844. Charlotte was a young servant girl, and Matthew, a farm labourer, was said to be obsessed with her. The narrative suggests he killed her in a fit of rage after she ended their relationship.

Charlotte's body was discovered on Roughtor, one of Bodmin Moor's most striking and desolate landmarks. The investigation quickly led authorities to Weeks. It was claimed that he confessed to the crime. At his trial, however, Matthew Weeks pleaded not guilty. Despite his plea, the jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to death by hanging.

The execution of Matthew Weeks took place in front of a large crowd, estimated at 20,000 people. His body was buried within the walls of Bodmin Jail. Ever since, his spirit is said to have been trapped there. A significant aspect of his haunting is the belief, held by many then and now, that he was innocent of the crime for which he paid the ultimate price. His ghost is described as a tortured soul, endlessly walking the corridors of the jail, perhaps still seeking the justice he was denied in life.

Eyewitnesses over the years have reported seeing his ghostly figure roaming the corridors, sometimes appearing in cells or peering out from the jail's windows. His story is a haunting reminder of Bodmin Moor's dark history and the finality of capital punishment.
