The Butcher’s Arms Era: A Foundation in History

The inn’s origins are tied to the 18th century, with parish records from 1761 documenting the burial of Leon Cuthbert, a man described as both “butcher and publican.” While the first official record of the name The Butcher’s Arms appears in 1823, Cuthbert’s existence suggests a public house linked to the butcher’s trade was on this site much earlier. For over a century, it served the community under this name. A 1925 valuation describes a classic village pub layout: a parlour, bar, tap room, and living quarters, with bedrooms and attics for the family and staff who lived on-site.

Around 1873, the name changed to The Knife & Cleaver. This maintained the thematic link to the tools of the trade, a detail paranormal researchers find significant, as it anchors the building’s identity in its visceral past.

A Legacy of Unexplained Events

Over the decades, a consistent stream of unexplained events built the inn’s reputation. Before any formal investigation, staff and regulars reported a wide range of phenomena that suggested an active, and at times physical, haunting. These included:
