Fred (The Unseen Night Watchman)
The phantom night porter who continues his vigilant rounds at The Bull Hotel, a historic coaching inn on Westgate, whose distinctive footsteps and jangling keys have been heard for generations.
Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Known for subtle yet eerie hauntings: an invisible presence dubbed “Fred” that makes footstep sounds and jingles keys, and the ghost of a dog linked to a tragic coaching accident. Other occasional apparitions (like fleeting shadows or figures in old-fashioned attire) have been reported anecdotally.
“Fred” (Unseen Night Watchman), Phantom Coach Dog (Residual Haunting), Shadowy Figure (Monk/Past Manager)
Guests and staff have for years encountered the unexplainable at The Bull. One commonly reported phenomenon is the sound of someone walking along the upstairs corridors when no one is there – heavy booted footsteps that carry on and sometimes the distinct jangle of keys, as if an unseen night watchman were making his rounds. This playful yet unnerving entity has been nicknamed “Fred” by employees. He never shows himself, but his presence is palpable. Another famous story involves a ghostly dog: in the 19th century, a coachman’s black Labrador was run over by a coach in the courtyard; now a spectral dog with muddy paws is said to roam the hotel. Housekeepers have opened empty guest rooms to find paw prints on a freshly made bed, with no sign of a real animal. Some guests also speak of a shadowy figure in a long coat seen briefly at the end of a hallway or near the cellar stairs, thought to be a monk or perhaps a past hotel manager continuing his duties.

The Bull has served as Peterborough's premier hotel for over 350 years, evolving from an 8-room coaching inn to the city's only AA-recognised 4-star hotel. Archaeological excavations in 1999 revealed brick burial vaults and human remains beneath the building, confirming legends that it was built on consecrated ground, possibly a former Nonconformist chapel cemetery. The hotel played crucial roles during the coaching era (1700s-1840s), the railway boom following 1850, and housed military officers during both World Wars. Major expansions occurred in 1901 and the 1970s, with extensive refurbishment under Peel Hotels from 1998.

Auditory hauntings (footsteps, keys clinking) are the most frequent. Physical evidence like phantom muddy paw prints have been reported on occasion. A few guests have felt a dog brush against their legs in the bar only to find nothing there. Lights have been known to flicker in an old banquet room (formerly part of a chapel, according to legend) without electrical cause.
The top floor corridors and certain rooms near the back (older part) are hotspots for the footstep-and-keys sounds. The courtyard and ground-floor hall by the kitchens are where the ghost dog’s presence is noted. Also, an old storage cellar is reputed to give people uneasy feelings, possibly related to the shadowy figure sightings.
One manager wrote in a log that on a quiet night he clearly heard someone walking towards the reception, keys rattling – but no one ever arrived. A guest in 2018 posted a review mentioning that she woke up to what sounded like a dog panting in her room; when she turned on the light, muddy paw prints were on the duvet, leading across the floor to a wall. Several staff over the years have attested to hearing ‘Fred’s’ footsteps, often at around 2-3 AM. In one case, a bartender locking up claimed he saw a dark dog-like shape bolt past the door and vanish.
The Bull Hotel's hauntings are officially documented in The Paranormal Database, which records 'footfalls and the sound of keys' being heard with 'the source never seen.' The hotel has been included in local ghost walks and was investigated by a Peterborough paranormal society in the 1980s. It featured in the TV series 'Great British Ghosts' and remains a recognised location in regional paranormal research. Hotel management maintains a policy of quiet acknowledgment rather than commercial exploitation of the phenomena.
