The Resident Spirits

View All County Ghosts

Haunted by the ghost of a former chamber maid, a woman who loved her job at the Griffin and, even after death, hasn’t let go of her duties.

Known Ghosts:

The Dutiful Maid ('Elizabeth'?) (Intelligent Haunting)

One frequently told story involves a guest who, returning to his locked room, found the bed made and his clothes neatly folded – far more tidy than he had left it – even though no staff had been by. Another account describes a spectral figure of a maid spotted on the landing after midnight, who then faded away when approached. Staff performing nightly checks have heard distinct feminine humming coming from empty rooms, reminiscent of a Victorian housemaid softly singing to herself while working. There are also reports of the maid ghost gently tapping on room doors as if to check if guests need anything; when guests answer the door – no one’s there. None of the happenings are frightening; instead they are oddly reassuring.

Historical Background

Building Age

16th-century origins (Inn. C16, C18 and late C19), with Georgian and Victorian modifications

Original Purpose

Coaching inn and posting house in the Fenland market town of March

Historical Significance

Grade II listed building dating to the 16th century with substantial intact medieval roof structure featuring clasped side purlin construction and heavy scantling rafters. The building evolved from single range Tudor inn to H-plan structure with 18th-century crosswings and late 19th-century Market Place facade. Served as coaching inn, later railway hotel during March's role as Great Eastern Railway junction. The 16th-century timber-framed core with Georgian brick facade represents centuries of continuous hospitality service in this historic Fenland market town.

What Guests Experience

Reported Activity

Unexplained cleaning or organising of guest belongings, soft knocks on doors with no one behind them, distant humming or singing, and the sense of someone brushing past in hallways. Some have felt a light tug on their bedcovers at dawn – perhaps a gentle wake-up call from a bygone era.

Most Active Areas

The upper floor guest rooms and corridor, particularly near Room 5 (an older part of the building), seem to host most of the activity. The stairwell and landing also come up in stories – people feel they are not alone there at night.

Witness Accounts

A former manager said, “I often felt a cool breeze and heard skirts rustle on the first-floor landing after midnight, as if the maid was making one last round.” A guest review from 2016 mentioned, “Charmed by the ghost – woke up to find my scattered shoes lined up neatly!” During a 2020 Halloween event, a guest captured a faint, misty figure on their smartphone in the hallway.

Paranormal Investigations

Ye Olde Griffin’s ghost is well-known among Fenland paranormal circles and listed on the Paranormal Database. The hotel has occasionally allowed small teams to do overnight vigils. In one case, they recorded audio of what sounded like a woman whispering “room five.” The Griffin has a framed snippet from a 19th-century newspaper in the lobby telling of a “ghost of a maid.”
