The Resident Spirits
View All County GhostsThe Burrator Inn is haunted by a mysterious lady in black, widely believed to be the ghost of the Victorian-era postmistress who once managed the post office that operated within the building. This spectral figure has been consistently reported over many decades, always appearing in black Victorian mourning attire and clutching a large bunch of keys. She moves silently through various areas of the inn, particularly those sections that once housed the post office, appearing to make her eternal rounds as she did in life. The haunting is characterised by both visual sightings and the distinctive sound of rattling keys, often heard when no one is visible. Witnesses describe her movements as purposeful rather than random, suggesting she continues her duties from beyond the grave. The consistency of reports from multiple independent witnesses over the years has made this one of Devon's most credible hauntings.
Known Ghosts:
The Phantom Postmistress, Lady in Black
The Phantom Postmistress of The Burrator Inn represents one of Dartmoor's most reliable spectral residents. Dressed in black Victorian mourning attire, she continues her postal rounds through the inn over a century after her death. Staff members regularly report encounters, particularly during quiet periods when the inn is less crowded. The most distinctive feature is the sound of a large bunch of keys rattling - the unmistakable sound often precedes a visual sighting, giving witnesses a chilling warning of her approach. During renovation work in the early 2000s, workers reported tools being moved, feeling watched, and hearing keys rattling in empty rooms. Some workers saw a dark figure observing their work, especially in areas being restored to Victorian configuration. Guests have awakened to the sound of keys outside their doors and glimpsed dark figures in corridors. Most witnesses report no sense of threat - instead, there's an overwhelming sense of duty and purpose. The Haunted Devon paranormal group has documented the haunting, noting it appears to be a residual haunting where the postmistress's strong sense of responsibility has imprinted itself on the building's fabric. She appears unaware of the living, focused entirely on her eternal duties.

Historical Significance
The Burrator Inn began as an exclusive Victorian hunting lodge in the 1850s, strategically positioned at the junction of ancient moorland tracks on the edge of Dartmoor. The building served as a base for wealthy sporting parties engaged in deer stalking, grouse shooting, and fox hunting. During the construction of Burrator Reservoir (1893-1898), the lodge transformed into a vital community hub, providing accommodation and refreshment for hundreds of workers on this major engineering project. In the early 1900s, part of the building served as the local post office, with the postmistress managing mail distribution for scattered moorland communities. The inn has continuously evolved through the motor age and rise of tourism, becoming a beloved stopping point for visitors exploring Dartmoor. Following extensive renovation in 2021 that preserved its historic character, the inn now features seven en-suite rooms, open fireplaces, and cosy corners that reflect its hunting lodge origins.
