The Resident Spirits

The White Hart Hotel harbours several supernatural residents, most notably a child spirit named Peter who delights in playing with visiting children and creating unexplained sounds throughout the building. The most compelling accounts come from staff members who experienced intense paranormal activity on the upper floors, including persistent footsteps on landings, repetitive light switching, and the presence of unseen entities moving through corridors. A translucent apparition of a man wearing a wide-rimmed hat has been witnessed by chambermaids, walking through doors and walls as if following ancient pathways through the building. The hotel's paranormal activity appears concentrated on the third floor, where staff quarters were located, with phenomena including mysterious footsteps that pace the landing repeatedly, lights switching on and off in rapid succession for extended periods, and the sensation of invisible presences moving past occupied rooms. These manifestations seem to follow patterns consistent with the building's historical use as a coaching inn, where travellers and staff would have moved through these same corridors and rooms for centuries.

Known Ghosts:

Peter the Child Spirit, The Man in the Wide-Rimmed Hat, The Mischievous Presence

The most documented paranormal experience occurred in 1997-98 when Head Chef Ken Platt witnessed extraordinary activity during his stay in staff quarters on the third floor. Over the course of a weekend night, Platt experienced what seemed to be another person repeatedly walking the landing, entering the adjacent room, switching lights on and off multiple times, then pacing the corridor for hours. The light switching became increasingly frantic, continuing in rapid succession for approximately thirty minutes before stopping. When Platt inquired about the disturbance, he discovered he was the only person on the third floor that night, as the bar manager had gone home for his days off. This revelation led to Platt learning about the hotel's reputation for housing two distinct spirits. A chambermaid from the 1990s reported encountering a translucent man wearing a wide-rimmed hat who walked directly through a door toward her before passing through a wall. Staff revealed this apparition was known to follow the path of a hidden staircase that once existed in that location. The child spirit Peter is heard playing and creating sounds that delight visiting children, suggesting an intelligent haunting that responds to the presence of young guests. Multiple witnesses report feeling watched in the upper corridors, and the persistent nature of the footsteps and light manipulation suggests spirits who remain tied to their earthly routines from centuries past.

Original Purpose

Coaching inn on the Old London Road

Historical Significance

The White Hart Hotel stands as Okehampton's oldest surviving inn, holding continuous licensing since 1623 when the town's charter was granted. This Grade II listed building served as the town's premier inn on what was once the Old London Road, a crucial coaching route through Devon. The hotel played a significant role in British political history, serving as a frequent meeting place for William Pitt the Elder, who was elected MP for the Borough of Okehampton in the mid-1750s and later became Prime Minister and 1st Earl of Chatham. The establishment hosted important election dinners and political gatherings that influenced 18th-century British politics. As part of The Trafalgar Way, the hotel was instrumental in the historic route used to carry dispatches with news of the Battle of Trafalgar from Falmouth to the Admiralty in London in November 1805. The building's three-storey structure could accommodate up to 100 horses on market days, providing fresh horses for travellers and horse-drawn vehicles including wagonettes, gigs, and jingles for local transport. Its location at the gateway to Dartmoor made it an essential stopping point for travellers entering what was described as 'the last great wilderness in southern England'.
